Passive fire protection

Fireproof sealing

Fireproofing is about protecting spaces by preventing fire and smoke from spreading. By sealing fireproof penetrations and cavities in a fire cell, fire and flue gas spread is prevented, which enables safe evacuation and limitation of the spread of the fire to adjacent spaces.

How does a fire seal work?

By sealing fireproof penetrations and cavities in a fire cell, fire and flue gas spread is prevented, which enables safe evacuation. A fire cell must be completely sealed in order to function properly. The regulations that apply to fire sealing are stated in the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s building regulations (BBR), where it is stated that an installation that breaks through a fire-rated building component must not impair the building component’s resistance to fire. Buildings are divided into fire cells that are designed to withstand fire for a specified period of time, such as EI30, EI60, EI90 and EI120.

The letters stand for the following properties, E = integrity (tightness) and I = insulation.
