About fire protection in tunnels

In the event of a fire, the load-bearing concrete in the tunnel roof and walls heats up very quickly. Within a few minutes, the temperature in the concrete can reach almost 1200 ° C. The moisture present in the surface layer of the concrete evaporates immediately, otherwise it seeks inwards and a large part accumulates at the rebar. The moisture expands and the concrete ruptures with explosive force, causing the tunnel to collapse in many cases.

Minimizing the risk of such a process is by far the most important aspect of fire protection in tunnels, and it is in this area that Täby BrandskyddsTeknik has world-leading expertise.

World-leading expertise in fire protection

We at TBT have world-leading expertise in fire protection of tunnels, and are often hired by tunnel builders around the world to increase safety and eliminate unnecessary costs.

The city tunnel in Stockholm

Citybanan is an approximately 6 km long railway tunnel that is being built under Stockholm’s inner city on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration. The construction was started after several years of planning in 2009 and is expected to be completed in 2016. In addition to the double track tunnels, a service and rescue tunnel will be built.

At the beginning of 2014, the General Contractors hired Täby BrandskyddsTeknik to review the fire protection and remedy any shortcomings in this. This review resulted in relatively extensive changes to the original floor plans – not only to ensure adequate fire protection, but also to eliminate unnecessary costs.
